Mackie Control not working with Cubase? Have an RME card? This could solve it….
If you have a Mackie Control and it isn’t working, and you have tried everything, I may have a solution for you. Here are the conditions:
1. You already know your USB connection is fine because the Mackie Control “USB Device” (all 4 of them) are listed.
2. You have an RME card (I use an HDSPe, but I have seen this with other cards as well).
3. You are using Cubase or Nuendo 4.x or higher
4. You can create a Remote Control device in Cubase/Nuendo and select the input of the USB Device for the Machine, but you have no USB device listed for the OUTPUT
5. You do not see the OUTPUTS for the Mackie USB devices in the MIDI listing in the “Devices” area of Cubase/Nuendo
6. You are using Windows XP
If this sounds like your problem, look at the RME card settings and look for the “WDM Devices” number field. The default is 32 for HDSPe cards. Change the value to a lower number like 12 or 8. Here is an older card picture that has already had the value changed:
After you make this change, shut down and restart your computer. Then go back into your Remote Control settings for the Mackie and make sure you have both the INPUT and OUTPUT settings for the Macking Control set properly. Once you apply, the Mackie should come alive. Good luck. Thanks to MW for the solution to this (twice).

Will Vevo be the next MTV?
Today was the official launch of Vevo, part of a joint effort by YouTube and Universal, Sony, and EMI. Think of it as the HULU for music videos. Revenue is generated by ad sales (and they have major sponsors already). Some videos will be premiered on the site, which will contain synchronized and integrated lyrics. At the launch party in New York it was revealed that high definition videos will be on the site starting next year. Of the four big labels, Warner is the only one not on board. It is being reported that A2IM (representing more than 200 independent labels) is in talks to participate as well. This may well be the next way to “break” new artist via the web instead of just traditional (and expensive) media.
Will this be a new way to generate revenue for the independent artist? Will it be a valid distribution and marketing mechanism that will allow artist to bypass the major labels? What do you think?

Another reason why the music industry sucks right now:
Diezel Schmidt
The Schmidt is a 30 or 15 watt class A amplifier with footswitch included. The footswitch provides switching of all three channels, effects loop and reverb. The footswitch runs via phantom power of a simple guitar cable. Each footswitch button is highlighted via a blue LED light so you can easily see what is active and what is not on the controller. The amp (head) is smaller in size then the Einstein and looks fantastic. It is named after the amp makers’ dog.
